The Men Who Order Death: Inside the Command Files of Fort Laval [Character Profiles]

When the orders from Algiers stop making sense, these three men hold the Legion together against the desert's madness.

The Men Who Order Death: Inside the Command Files of Fort Laval [Character Profiles]

They say the French Foreign Legion is a machine that turns men into numbers.

But in the deep Sahara, numbers don’t survive. Only men do.

While the soldiers fight the Arabs and the heat, three men bear the crushing weight of keeping the garrison alive. They must navigate mutinies, political betrayal, and the unforgiving sand.

Before your delve into the three characters, make sure to read the fifth book in the exciting Sahara Adventure Series written by Meiring Fouche, available on Amazon.

Here are the classified dossiers of the leadership behind the Sahara Adventure Series.

FILE #004: Colonel Le Clerq (The Administrator)

Role: The Anchor of Dini-Salam.

The Secret: He presents himself as the iron-fisted commander, but he is actually an aging, lonely man terrified of losing his reputation. He relies on Cognac to cope with the pressure of sending men to their deaths.

Why He Survives: Logistics. He is the man who makes the planes, the ammo, and the reinforcements appear when the forward teams are surrounded. He fights his wars from behind a desk.

Fatal Flaw: Complacency. He often dismisses initial reports of trouble, like the beggar with the medal in Signal from the Dunes, until it is almost too late.

FILE #005: Captain D’Arlan (The Strategist)

Role: The “Houdini” of the Sahara.

The Secret: He projects an image of icy calm, but internally he is tormented by the “suicide missions” General Raval assigns him. He despises the politics tearing the Legion apart during the OAS mutiny.

Why He Survives: Psychological Warfare. He defeats superior numbers not by shooting, but by trickery. In The Goras Bloodbath, he poisons wells and burns supplies to deny the enemy, proving he is a ruthless guerrilla fighter when necessary.

Fatal Flaw: Over-reliance on Logic. He sometimes fails to predict the sheer irrational fanaticism of enemies like the Doelaks, walking into traps because he assumes the enemy will act rationally.

FILE #006: Sergeant Catroux (The Machine)

Role: The Enforcer.

The Secret: He acts as if he has no emotions, yet he is deeply affected when he has to command the firing squad to execute a fellow Legionnaire in Under a Blazing Sky.

Why He Survives: Drill. He can take a chaotic mob and turn them into a firing line in seconds. His voice cuts through the noise of battle or the confusion of a mutiny.

Fatal Flaw: Lack of Imagination. He cannot improvise. If the rulebook doesn’t cover it, Catroux is lost.
