We’ve all heard the phrase, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” But in the world of ebook publishing, that is exactly what everyone does. The cover is your shop window. If it doesn’t stop the scroll, the book doesn’t sell.
For the past few months, I have been working on a massive project. Rebranding the 40-volume Sahara Adventure series by Meiring Fouché. These books, available in English and Afrikaans on Amazon, are classic action tales set in the French Foreign Legion between 1930 and 1950.
The original covers and stock photography serve a purpose, but they often lack the “punch” of the era. I wanted the new covers to look like the vintage pulp magazines of the 1940s dramatic oil paintings, high contrast, and grit. To achieve this, I experimented with AI art tools.
The AI nailed the style. It captured the brushstrokes and the intense atmosphere perfectly. But it failed the truth test.
The Integrity of the Image
As an author and self-publisher, I have a golden rule: The cover creates a promise that the book must keep.
If the cover shows a Legionnaire wrestling a lion, and the book is about a stealthy reconnaissance mission, the reader will feel cheated. AI tools are prone to “hallucinations”, creating epic, high-octane scenarios that simply do not happen in the text.
I decided to create a “Blooper Reel” of sorts. Below are 8 covers that are visually spectacular, but were rejected because they promised adventures that Meiring Fouché never wrote!

The Verdict: This is one of my favorites purely for the absurdity. The AI decided the 1930s Sahara needed wind-powered land yachts and... is that a tactical go-kart? The energy is incredible, but unless the Legion was testing prototypes for a post-apocalyptic future, this had to go.
2. The Steve McQueen Special - The Motorcycle Sidecar jump

The Verdict: This looks like a scene straight out of Indiana Jones. While the Legion did use vehicles, this high-flying stunt with a mounted machine gun is a bit too Hollywood for the grounded, gritty survival stories in the series.
3. The Gladiator Match - Wrestling the Lion

The Verdict: A classic pulp trope! A man fighting a lion with a dagger is the definition of “High Adventure.” However, Fouché’s books deal more with Tuareg rebels and thirst than they do with wrestling apex predators. I can’t promise the reader a lion fight if there isn’t one.
4. The Steam Train Showdown - Shovel vs. Scimitar on the train

The Verdict: The lighting here is phenomenal. The clash of the coal shovel against the scimitar on top of a moving steam engine is epic. But this is a very specific scene. Unless Book 12 features exactly this moment, using this cover would be false advertising.
5. The Tank Buster - Climbing the Tank

The Verdict: This captures the chaos of war perfectly. But the Sahara Adventure series focuses heavily on infantry patrols, camels, and forts. A full-blown tank assault with hand grenades suggests a massive World War II frontline battle, which changes the genre expectation too much.
6. The River Monster - Wrestling the Crocodile

The Verdict: Again, the art style is beautiful. Just look at the water splashing! But we are deep in the Sahara. While there are oases and the Niger River, a life-or-death wrestling match with a crocodile is a bit too “Tarzan” for the Foreign Legion.
7. The Biblical Plague - The Locust Swarm

The Verdict: This is actually terrifying. A firefight in the middle of a locust swarm? Visually unique and very striking. But this implies a horror/disaster element that just isn’t part of the series.
8. The Cliffhanger - Cutting the Rope Bridge

The Verdict: This is the ultimate cliffhanger image. Cutting the bridge while you are still on it? It screams “Action Movie.” But again, specific geography matters. If the book is set in the flat dunes of the deep desert, a giant chasm with a rope bridge makes no sense.
The Real Covers Are Coming
It is tempting to use these images. They grab your attention. They scream “Buy Me!”
But for the 40-book Sahara Adventure series, accuracy is key. I am happy to report that I have curated a set of new covers that balance this beautiful pulp artistic style with the actual content of Meiring Fouché’s writing.
They feature the heat, the isolation, the camels, and the historical accuracy of the French Foreign Legion, without the accidental “Mad Max” vehicles.
The entire series with the official new covers will be live on Amazon soon. Until then, I hope you enjoyed this tour of the adventures that almost were.
